6 Signs That LASIK Could Be Right For You

Have you forgotten your contact solution more times than you can count? Do you wonder what it would be like to play sports without glasses? Getting LASIK improves your quality of life.

LASIK is tailored to all your vision needs and can change your life forever.

Deciding to get LASIK eye surgery is a big step when deciding to improve your life. If you are thinking about LASIK, having a conversation with a surgeon is the next step.

Like all surgeries, not everyone is a good LASIK candidate. You need to meet certain criteria for LASIK before you know if you are a good candidate.

Also, you need to have a consultation to see if you qualify. Here are 6 signs LASIK could be right for you:

You’re At Least 18 Years Old

While there is no limit on how old you can be when you get LASIK, you must be at least 18 years old. This is an FDA regulation.

Most surgeons prefer patients who are in their mid-twenties. By this time, their eyes are less likely to change after getting LASIK.

Getting LASIK before 18 means that you have a high chance of your vision changing. Having LASIK more than once is not recommended.

You Have A Stable Prescription

To qualify for LASIK, you have to have a stable prescription that’s remained unchanged for a year or more. LASIK is not the right option for you if your vision is still changing.

Your vision will continue to change without a stable prescription.

You’re In Good Health

You do not need to have perfect health, but you do need to be in good health. During your LASIK consultation, you’ll go over your medical history.

You have to disclose if you have keratoconus, glaucoma, or diabetes. It is still possible to get LASIK if you have diabetes.

LASIK is not recommended if you have keratoconus or glaucoma. If you are not a candidate for LASIK, there are other procedures you could qualify for, like PRK.

Can You Afford The Cost Of LASIK?

One important factor to consider is if you can afford LASIK. Since LASIK is an elective procedure, insurance companies don’t cover it.

If you can afford it and qualify, then LASIK could be the right procedure for you.

You Have Healthy Eyes

While it is important to have good health, you need to have healthy eyes as well. A good LASIK candidate should not have chronic dry eye, pink eye, or any eye injuries.

LASIK is not a good idea if you have any of these conditions. You could qualify for LASIK later if you are able to manage these conditions and have them under control.

You Are Not Pregnant

If you are pregnant, this causes changes in your hormones. These hormonal changes can also cause vision changes. The changes can be temporary or permanent.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should wait to get LASIK. This should be once you are no longer breastfeeding, for at least three months after.

If you are planning on having kids, you should wait to have LASIK until you know you won’t have anymore. This is the only way to know for sure that your vision won’t change due to another pregnancy.
